Trigger warning: images of police and SWAT officers with weapons.
I stopped doing interviews for the most part in the first month after I was taken hostage in September 2010. I had pretty much told that story. But I always said if someone wanted to tell a story of hope and survival and how I was learning to overcome my PTSD, I would be willing to do that.
I was approached by Brian Hopkins—a cameraman for ABC7 Washington, and friend of mine from when I worked at the TV station from 2000-2002—about whether I would be willing to do a story about our support group for the upcoming November sweeps. I was excited about the opportunity to be able to expand the reach of our group, so I quickly accepted the offer.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with reporter Kevin Lewis, who interviewed two members of our group and myself in late September 2018 at St. Patrick’s Parish Center in Rockville, MD, where we hold our monthly meetings.
The above video aired on ABC7 News at 11 on Friday, Nov. 10, 2018. The written story on the station’s website goes into even more details on how our group came to be.
A very special thank you to Kevin, Brian, and the 7 on Your Side team for helping us spread the word about the good work that is happening here in The Upper Room PTSD Support Group!
